THE PALACE OF PHILIP II AT AIGAI

The palace at Aigai, with a total area of 12,500 square meters, is not only the biggest, but together with the Parthenon the most important  building of Classical Greece. The conservation and the restoration of the palace, is an enormous effort which has been assumed by the 17th  Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in 2007 and continues uninterrupted within the framework of projects being co-funded by the European Union. The systematic investigation and the detailed documentation of the building, which was necessary for this work, proves that this unique monument formed part of a major building project of Philip II (359-336 BC).
