HIERAPETRA ARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTION

The Archaeological Collection of Hierapetra began to be formed in the late 19th century, when its antiquities-loving residents founded the  Educational Association of Hierapetra (Filekpedeftikos Syllogos Ierapetras), whose purpose was to gather and preserve the region’s antiquities, as  well as to create a museum collection. All the objects that were saved from damage and looting, and all those collected during the years, turned  over to authorities by local or more recently excavated by archaeologists, in the greater region of the Municipality of Hierapetra, dating back from the 3rd millennium BC to the 5th c. AD, form the Archaeological Collection of Hierapetra, housed today in the landmark building of the Ottoman  School or Mehtepi, built in 1899.
