THE ANCIENT CITY OF SAMOS

The excavations, begun around 45 years ago by the Greek Archaeological Service, have revealed many facts about the ancient city of Samos,  which developed in parallel with its neighboring sanctuary dedicated to the Mother Goddess Hera.

The earliest habitation to be confirmed by  excavation in the ancient city dates to the Neolithic period (5th/4th millennium BC). It was agricultural in nature, and has been identified on  the hill of the Castle of Lykourgos Logothetes at Pythagorio. About 1000 BC, Ionians from Epidauria arrived on the island and settled its  southeast coast, at the site of modern Pythagorio. The wealth of archaeological finds from recent excavations in the ancient city, especially its Geometric  cemetery, testifies to the existence of a particularly important installation with significant artistic development during the Geometric period  (10th-8th c. BC), which continued in the 7th c. BC. The Samians established colonies on the opposite coast of Ionia, in Thrace, and in the West.
