The prehistoric settlement of Sesklo grew up on the Kastraki hill and surrounding area, near the modern village of Sesklo. The first excavation of the settlement was conducted in 1901-1902 by Chr. Tsountas. Later (1956), a new excavation of the hill and the surrounding area was begun by D.R. Theocharis, lasting until 1977.
