Pylos was the second most important centre in the Mycenaean world after Mycenae itself. Unlike the other citadels of the 13th c. BC, it was unfortified. The palace complex, known as the palace of Nestor, has a grandeur and wealth that attests to the economic prosperity and high cultural level of the kingdom of Homer’s Nestor who took part in the Trojan War and ruled for three generations.
