The Museum’s creation. The Spetses Museum is installed in the listed mansion of Chatzigiannis Mexis, a powerful notable of Spetses during the Greek War of Independence. At the encouragement of Academician Georgios A. Sotiriou, a native of Spetses, the building was donated to the Greek state in 1938 by Kalomira Mexi and Niketa Thermisioti to house the island’s archaeological, historical, and folklore collections after their death.
