Platamon castle was one of the fortified Middle Byzantine cities (10th-11th century) that were built on naturally fortified sites to control major roads. It stands on the route between Macedonia and Thessaly via Tempe. Ancient sources and modern excavational finds locate the ancient Herakleion here, a city which existed until the Early Christian period.
