ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF KAVALA

The Archaeological Museum of Kavala is the central museum of the XVIII Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities. Its galleries host  representative monuments from the wider cultural region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. During recent years, it also functions as a place for  cultural events of the city of Kavala and its greater area.

The Museum first opened its doors to the public in December 1964, and acquired a new wing in late 2000. Its new permanent exhibition, completed in 2009, occupies part of the old building and the new wing. Its subject is the  history of the city of Kavala, and it is entitled “Neapolis-Christoupolis-Kavala”, resulting from the city’s three names in antiquity, the Byzantine  period, and modern times, respectively. The second floor of the new wing includes an area for temporary exhibitions, a small lecture hall, and a  space for educational programs.
